Martyrs Monument & Museum
A large memorial complex and museum in the city of Mekele in Ethiopia
's northern Tigrai region. This region was the most active part of the country in the resistance fight by the TPLF against the Derg regime in the capital Addis
(see also Red Terror Museum
) between the 1974 and 1991.
The museum is said to have a range of artefacts such as military hardware on display as well as images from the conflict and even a series of coffins on “unknowns”. I hope to find out and see for myself when I finally make it to Ethiopia, hopefully at the end of 2019. If/when I do I'll post a full report here, of course.
The site, ca. a kilometre south of the city centre, is said to be open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a small admission fee is levied (ca. 2 USD).
Mekele is also the usual start- and end point of tours into the Danakil Depression and to Erta Ale
