Brandenburg 'euthanasia' centre
- darkometer rating: 6 -
The site of one of the six euthanasia centres of the "Action T4
" in Nazi Germany
. In fact the centre at Brandenburg was the place where the first gas chamber "tests" took place in January 1940, before the method was applied on a truly industrialized scale first at Grafeneck
, then at the other designated euthanasia centres (and later also the concentration camps
and, ultimately, the death camps
of the Holocaust
Unlike the other five places, Brandenburg lacked a proper memorial centre for over 70 years. There were merely a few text plaques in the heart of the city of Brandenburg/Havel, at Neuendorfer Straße. Later a monument representing the grey buses that were used for the transport of the victims was added to the site too.

But now a new memorial centre and exhibition are said to be under construction – by the time you read this it may already have opened its door to the public. Until then, a single memorial room at the authentic place inside the still active prison can (could) be visited on a guided tour by prior appointment only (at least two weeks in advance, contact:
, tel. 03301-200 200).
Once I've had a chance to check out the new memorial myself, I'll report back here.
