D-Day museums and memorials in Normandy

The “D-Day” landings of Operation Overload, i.e. the Allied invasion of continental Europe from Britain, started the war effort on the Western front with the aim of driving the occupying German forces out of France and defeating Germany, with success, as we all know.

All along the stretch of coastline where this largest amphibious operation and invasion of all time took place, as well as several places further inland, are literally littered with a larger number of museums and memorials than this website could possibly cover comprehensively or in much detail.

A few that do have their own chapters are: the Mémorial de Caen and its guided tours to D-Day beaches (which include the American war cemetery and memorial near Utah Beach); the Liberation Museum in Cherbourg is also related to this topic and has its own chapter.

For those sites in this area that are part of the massive fortifications that the Nazis constructed along this coast see under Atlantic Wall.

Note also that those with a keen interest in the area and all its military sites are well catered for by a number of specialist tour operators and dedicated websites.

Here just a selection of the larger and/or more important museums and memorials will be mentioned in brief in the following lists.
